Convert between the four common web image formats
This converter reads PNG, JPG, WebP and AVIF files and saves them as any of those same four formats. It is the tool to reach for when a site gives you a format you cannot open, when a CMS rejects an upload, or when you want to compare how a picture behaves as AVIF versus WebP.
As with our PNG to WebP converter, the work is done by your browser. Files are decoded, redrawn on a canvas and encoded again in the format you pick, so they are never sent over the network. You control the quality of lossy outputs, and you can cap the width to reduce dimensions at the same time.
Keep in mind how each format treats transparency. PNG, WebP and AVIF can be see-through, but JPG cannot, so the converter fills transparent pixels with white when you choose JPG.
How to use the Image Converter
- Add one or more images by dragging them in or using Choose files. PNG, JPG, WebP and AVIF are accepted.
- Select the output format under Convert to.
- Set the quality. The slider is disabled for PNG because PNG is always lossless.
- Optionally type a maximum width to scale larger images down.
- Click Convert images, then review the size change shown for each file.
- Download images one by one or press Download all as ZIP.
What you get
- Four formats in, four formats out: WebP, AVIF, JPG and PNG.
- Quality slider and width limit for lossy output.
- Batch of up to 20 files, with a ZIP download for the results.
- Side-by-side original and converted sizes so you can judge the trade-off.
- Private by design: no uploads, no account, no watermark.
When it comes in handy
- Opening a WebP or AVIF download in software that only understands JPG or PNG.
- Producing WebP versions of a photo gallery for a faster website.
- Testing whether AVIF gives a noticeably smaller file for a given photo.
- Converting a PNG logo to JPG for a form that refuses anything else.
- Shrinking a large camera image to a sensible width before emailing it.
Which format should you pick?
| Format | Choose it when | Transparency |
|---|---|---|
| WebP | You want small files that every modern browser can show. | Yes |
| AVIF | You want the smallest photos and your audience uses recent browsers. | Yes |
| JPG | You need maximum compatibility for photos. | No |
| PNG | You need lossless quality, sharp text or transparency everywhere. | Yes |
Tips for better results
- Convert from the best original you have. Re-saving an already compressed JPG as WebP cannot restore lost detail.
- Avoid cycling a file through several lossy formats, because small losses add up.
- AVIF encoding is not available in every browser. If the AVIF option fails, use WebP instead.
- Choose PNG when a picture contains small text or sharp lines, and WebP or AVIF for photos.
- Resize to the largest size your page actually displays, then compress.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats can I upload?
PNG, JPG (JPEG), WebP and AVIF files are accepted, up to 25 MB each and 20 files per batch.
Why does AVIF conversion fail in my browser?
Encoding AVIF from a canvas depends on browser support. Update your browser or choose WebP, which every current browser can create.
Does converting reduce image quality?
JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy at the settings used here, so some detail is traded for size. At quality 80 to 90 the change is usually hard to notice. PNG output is lossless, but it cannot recover detail lost earlier.
What happens to transparent areas?
They stay transparent for PNG, WebP and AVIF. For JPG, which cannot store transparency, they are filled with white.
Are my pictures sent to a server?
No. Decoding and encoding both happen in your browser, so the files stay on your device.
Why did my converted file get bigger?
This can happen when you convert a heavily compressed JPG to PNG, or a tiny graphic to a modern format. Pick a lossy format at a lower quality, or keep the original.
Can I keep the original dimensions?
Yes. Leave the max width box empty and the converter keeps the original width and height.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap Choose files, pick pictures from your gallery, select a format and download the results.
